Juicing with Total Cleanse!

Kara’s experience: As someone who has never done a juice cleanse before, I decided to ease my way into it. Hence the reason why I chose Total Cleanse’s Energize Cleanse. The description on the website described me to a tee “The Energize Cleanse is ideal for people who eat whatever they want, whenever they want, but are also looking to give their bodies a REST.” It is a mild cleanse, perfect for someone who hasn’t done it before. I’ve known the benefits of juicing for a while. I took workshops on juicing & smoothies with Maria Amore, where I learned which brand of juicers are best, how to differentiate organic produce from non-organic produce and about the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen.

Juicing is time consuming because it requires a lot of prep. That is the main reason why I hadn’t jumped on the juicing bandwagon. So I went the Total Cleanse route. You choose the cleanse you want, how long you want to do it for and they deliver it to your door in an ice-packed filled box. Not only do they do the prep, but you don’t even have to leave your house to get the juice. Now that’s my kind of juicing!! There are many reasons why I finally decided to try it for myself. My mom passed away 2 months ago and my world was turned upside down. My eating habits were never that great to begin with, but now I didn’t have much of an appetite at all. When I did eat it was at weird hours and it wasn’t the healthiest of choices. I turned 30 a few months ago, and I immediately noticed a change in my body; I could still eat whatever I wanted, but that coupled with my lack of motivation to work out, made me feel the difference in my clothes. Also, I was planning a 2-3 month trip and I wanted to give my body a break before I put it through 12-hour time differences and spicy asian cuisine. I am a very disciplined person, so I knew I would be able to do the cleanse, however, I am a foodie at heart. The thought of not eating was slightly daunting, but I know many other foodies who have successfully done many juice cleanses. Based on their results, I knew this was definitely worth the try! Day 1 – February 25th I started my cleanse around 9am. My first juice was Green Energy; and it definitely tasted green! I tasted the cucumber and the parsley right away. It tasted like a bloody Caesar without the tomato and Tabasco! Not a bad way to start my morning! Next I had the Lemon rush around 11am. My first thought was how delicious it was. The cayenne pepper gave it some bite. Next another Green Energy around 1pm on my way to Rachelle Bery for some supplies, just in case I wouldn’t be able to handle the next 3 juices. By 2pm I was starving, so I stocked up on some PRANA organic non-roasted cashews, organic Raw European almonds, organic avocadoes and some organic and vegan pumpkin seeds. I refrained from eating anything right away, as I wanted to hold out on solids for as long as I could. I walked home and drank my second Lemon Rush, then devoured my Very Berry. That was by far my favorite juice. So sweet and delicious it didn’t taste like I was juicing. I have to admit that I was dreading the Creamy Cashew Milk. I hadn’t drank dairy milk since I was forced too in elementary school, and although I knew this wasn’t milk milk, I knew the first sip would be a tough one. I was very happy when my first sip was more watery with a cashew flavour than creamy. Overall my first juicing day went well. I “cheated” by eating a handful of cashews at night, but many bloggers and websites say that if you need to eat, organic fruits and nuts are ok. Since the weather was very cold during my cleanse, and all I could think of was comfort food, I drank several organic peppermint teas throughout the day.

Day 2 – February 26th On the second day of my juice cleanse I was road tripping to Ottawa. I was on vacation, and my boyfriend had a meeting, so I accompanied him for the drive. So I packed up my 6 juices surrounded by ice packs and a tall straw and we hit the road. The fun part of road tripping, even if the drive is only 90 minutes, is that you can stop and eat junk food on the way! Not this time. When we stopped for Tim Horton’s it was for a large peppermint tea for me, while my boyfriend enjoyed a breakfast sandwich and coffee. Note: If juicing while taking a long drive, prepare yourself for the bathroom stops and the annoyed driver! No word of a lie, I had to use the bathroom 3 times in 10 minutes. We stopped in Gatineau to see my boyfriends new baby cousin and we picked up lunch for the new parents. Sitting at the table, with my juice, was tough while watching them eat some of my favorite foods. But I survived it and kept drinking my green juice. As a treat when I got home, I warmed up my Cashew milk and drank it while watching tv. Perfect way to get me ready for bed! total cleanse blog pic

 

Day 3 – February 27th I’ve heard that day 3 of a juice cleanse is the hardest. It definitely wasn’t easy. Although I wasn’t that hungry, I was craving food. Specifically the polpette at Pizza Napoletana. Throughout the day I thought to myself that I could definitely do another cleanse. The important thing is to somewhat like the juices you’re drinking. That makes it so much easier to drink them instead of eat. When I was craving food, I ate an avocado with fresh lemon juice and pepper. For someone like me that doesn’t have the time to do all the prep, having juices delivered to your door is the way to go!

Here are some of my recommendations: -Don’t juice if you know if you have dinner out planned -Juice when you’re as distracted as possible -Drink lots of warm water and lemon or herbal teas during the winter -Plan your bathroom breaks ahead -Don’t juice if you feel a cold coming on (it will take away the energy the juice is giving you) -Juice with a friend – send each other motivational text messages and compare your progress -Don’t rely solely on juicing to lose weight – you will likely regain any weight you lost if you don’t change your eating habits and keep up the juicing

Katrina’s Experience I consider myself to be a very health conscious person, and am very aware of all the amazing health benefits associated with clean eating and juicing. I came across Total Cleanse while doing some research online, although they are a Toronto-based company, they ship across Canada, which is ultra convenient! The price is also very reasonable at approximately $50.00 per day. As someone who has done a couple juice cleanses over the last couple of years, I decided to try the Purify Cleanse, which is one of Total Cleanses most extreme cleanse, at only 1200 calories per day. The description on the website describes it as the following ” provides you with enough energy to get you through the day without feeling light headed or weak”. The Purify Cleanse includes six juices per day; 4 Green Energy, 1 Lemon Rush and 1 Creamy Cashew Milk. It is definitely a more advanced cleanse that requires a lot of will power.

Day 1 – February 25th I started my cleanse at 9:30 a.m. when I arrived at the office. I had Total Cleanse ship directly to my work address since that would be more convenient for me. My package for the 3-day cleanse arrived the day before in a special cooler pack with instructions that every bottle was to be kept refrigerated. My first juice was the Green Energy, which I thought was quite savoury thanks to the parsley. I had the Lemon Rush around 11:30 a.m. and absolutely loved the burst of lemony flavor paired with the spiciness of the cayenne. It was a delight to drink, but definitely did not fill me up. I had my third juice (Green Energy) by 1:00 p.m. I managed to finish another Lemon Rush, and my third bottle of Green Energy before 5:30 p.m., as I left the office I grabbed my Creamy-Cashew Milk to go! I ended up warming it up at home (not sure if that killed any of the nutrients) but my body was craving warmth. It was delicious, and by favourite drink of the cleanse. It was much more dense and had a little nutty sweetness to it, it was really tasty. Overall, my first day of juicing went quite well, it definitely helped that I had a fairly busy day at work. What didn’t help was that I was sick with a bad cough and cold that my body was trying to fight off, so with the sudden drop in calorie consumption, my body definitely felt more weak than usual. It also didn’t help that the weather outside was still quite cold. My body was craving warmth throughout the cleanse. I ended up heating up my cashew milk, and drinking it warm at night which was a nice treat!

Day 2 – February 25th On the second day of my cleanse, I woke up and started my day with a glass or warm water with the juice from 1 freshly squeezed lemon. I forgot my first juice of the second day at the office, so I had to wait until I reached work to officially start juicing. The second day was a lot easier as I knew what to expect, but still felt hungry on and off throughout the day. I found myself craving all my favourite healthy meals! I really liked the flavours of the juices, but felt it would have been nice to have a bit more variety. I did find myself feeling hungry throughout the day, and made sure to drink as much herbal tea and water as possible throughout my day! It was date night, so I drank my 6th juice, the Creamy-Cashew Milk as my boyfriend and I watched The Wire curled up on the couch. It was hard resisting one of his amazing spicy Caesars, but I forced myself to stay true to the cleanse, and had some herbal tea instead. 10408634_10152659600053388_2091869387918947841_n Day 3 – February 27th I started Day 3 with resisting a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a hot cup of coffee! I thankfully decided to pack my first Green Energy juice and drank it on the bus on my way to work! My solid food cravings weren’t as bad today, and I was actually looking forward to my day of juicing. Despite still fighting off my cold, my skin and eyes were starting to look a little brighter and my energy levels felt really good! I had my first Lemon Rush around 11:30 a.m. I decided to switch the consumption order around, as I felt I needed a bit more energy, and had my Creamy-Cashew Milk as my third juice of the day around 1:00 p.m. I ended up warming it up in the microwave at the office. It definitely gave me some warmth and the energy to get through my day! I finished two more juices before leaving the offices, and brought home my final juice, Green Energy. I had my last juice around 7:00 p.m. and drank herbal tea for the rest of the night knowing that I would be able to start eating again when I woke up. Overall, I felt that this was a great experience, but in hindsight, I probably should have waited for the weather to get a bit warmer, and should have waited till my cough and cold had passed. My chest was congested throughout the three days which made drinking cold liquid feel somewhat unpleasant.

Here are some of my recommendations: - Keep busy! I personally loved doing the cleanse over my work week, I had tons of distractions which was great! – Juice with a friend! (It was great to complete the cleanse with Kara as we were able to motivate each other along the way!) – Prior Proper Planning! You should prepare your body for the cleanse in the days leading up to it, I kept a mostly raw vegan diet for the days before starting and – Break your cleanse with healthy foods, don’t binge with junk food! I made sure to eat lots of vegetable soup fruits and veggies, and avoided any high calorie or starchy meals. – Move your body! Unfortunately I didn’t have the energy to attend my usual Bikram yoga classes, but I made sure to take an extra 30 minute walk everyday in addition to my regular routine. -Watch You Tube Videos on juicing, or browse the web…there’s so much great information out there that will keep you motivated!
