(CNN) Thousands of homes in Haiti were affected by flooding caused by last weekend’s heavy rains, leaving at least 42 dead and 85 injured, according to a statement released Monday by the country’s civil protection agency.
Heavy rains on Saturday caused several rivers to overflow across Haiti, leading to extreme flooding and landslides, the agency said Sunday. More than 13,300 people have been displaced and at least 11 have been reported missing in five of Haiti’s 10 departments: West, Nippes, Southeast, Northwest and Center.
“My government, in coordination with national and international institutions, is taking urgent measures to respond to the needs of the moment”, tweeted Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
The death toll continued to climb on Monday as torrential and persistent rain continued to fall. Emergency response teams and relief organizations have been mobilized to care for those affected by the floods.
“We will begin providing hot meals to displaced people in the coming hours and are mobilizing ready-to-eat rations and non-perishable food,” the World Food Program said in a tweet.
