(CNN) — The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has achieved the feat: this Sunday he defeated the favorite Novak Djokovic and with it he won the first Wimbledon title of his career.
Alcaraz defeated the Serbian Djokovic in an exciting final which lasted until the fifth and final set. The Wimbledon title also meant his second Grand Slam title, after winning the US Open in 2022.
Alcaraz, the world No. 1 at just 20, came from a set down to take a 2-1 lead before Djokovic leveled the match to win a tense fourth set. However, the Serbian failed to pull off another epic comeback and, for now, his 24th Grand Slam title will have to wait.
The Spaniard won after almost five hours on center court with 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6 and 6-4, and fell to the ground in celebration before throwing a ball from tennis to the public.
The 20-year-old becomes the third youngest Wimbledon champion in the Open Era.
