(CNN Spanish) — The Colombian attorney general, Francisco Barbosa, announced on Monday that the arrest warrant against Eliécer Herlinto Chamorro, alias Antonio García, leader of the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla, will be suspended.
Barbosa, during his speech at the Departments’ National Security Summit, stated that he had received a formal request from President Gustavo Petro, and that, after verifying the legal procedures, he believes that the request can be carried forward.
Alias Antonio García has led the ELN since June 2021 and joined the guerrilla group in 1975, according to the Insight Crime research center.
This Monday, President Petro held a meeting with his military leadership in which he discussed the progress of the third round of peace talks between the ELN and the Colombian government that are taking place in Cuba.
