The first patient dies in Mexico from infection with the fungus Fusarium solani

(CNN Spanish) — The Secretary of Health of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas reported the first death of a patient from an infection of the central nervous system caused by the fungus Fusarium solani. The woman was admitted to a private clinic in the city of Matamoros.

Tamaulipas health secretary Vicente Joel Hernández Navarro said that “despite medical efforts and the application of drugs, the patient’s health has deteriorated as the days go by.”

He explained that, so far in the entity, there are 24 cases of this infection “we have had six people hospitalized, two are in Victoria High Specialty Hospital, who have been transferred for follow-up; they are not serious, another was the patient in the private hospital, and the rest are in different medical institutions under close supervision and medical care,” said Hernández Navarro.

He stressed that the investigation into the causes that led to this situation is being conducted by the Attorney General’s Office.

According to the US National Institutes of Health, the Fusarium solani fungus can cause skin gland infections, onychomycosis, keratitis, and endophthalmitis.
